Praia da Vitória is a city and municipality located in the eastern part of the island of Terceira , in the central group of the Azores archipelago .
In the Azores , the town has about 6600 inhabitants . It is the seat of a municipality with 162.29 km ² and 21,035 inhabitants (2011 ) , divided into 11 parishes . The municipality , one of two of the island is bordered to the south and west by the municipality of Angra do Heroismo and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east.
The landscape of the county is marked by the Planice do Ramo Grande , which in the past constituted the barn on the island and now almost entirely occupied by the Lajes Air Force Base and internacional Airport.
The coast line is quite sharp , predominating the cliffs and pebble areas . The bay of Praia da Vitoria hosts an extensive beach , the only island of the archipelago and the most extensive .
The climate is similar to the archipelago , humid and temperate maritime . The average yearly temperature is around 17.6 ° C , with February the coldest month ( 14.3 ° C) and August the warmest (20 ° C ) .The bay of Praia da Vitória , is considered by many as the best in Europe to practice sea sports , presenting all year , excellent wind conditions and sea views. Sheltered by two pontoons , is ideal for making the " delights " of any boater place.
